Dr. Vicki King, professional
pianist and teacher, almost lost
the use of her arms through
tension. She has made a lifetime
study of piano technique--the way
to play naturally, effortlessly, and
without pain. She is the author of
the book, "Playing the Piano
Naturally." Contact her for a
master class, workshop, or for
one-on-one consultation to make
your piano playing enjoyable and
pain-free!
Look at the natural position of the hand
above. This is the same natural
position used in everyday activities--the
same natural hand position used to
play the piano. Notice the two hand
muscles working together to hold the
world. These are the same two
muscles used to play chords or
octaves, but often pianists use the 1st
and 4th fingers for chords or octaves,
rather than the natural 1 and 5.
Performance Injuries
Over 50% of musicians suffer some type of
injury or pain related to playing.
We use our hands and arms in normal activities day
after day with no pain or injury. Why, then, do
musicians suffer injuries while playing an instrument?
In using the muscles in normal daily activities,
we use only the amount of muscle necessary to
accomplish the purpose. Then we immediately
relax. If we apply the same principles of muscle
use and relaxation to piano playing, we can play
for many hours a day without fatigue.
